BEST Handmade Book Swap

Attention all B.E.S.T members!
We are now preparing for our next group book swap! You must be a member of BEST to participate.

The swaps are now coordinated by Cindy, UsefulBooks. Contact her for more information if you want to know how to sign up.

Please send a book that you are proud of, something that you think represents your craft and shows your skill. That way, everybody gets a great book!

It would be nice if everyone could sign and date their books before sending them. Include a little note for your book's new owner with some basic info about the book and your work, the type of binding, the materials used, or any details that you want to share.

We are planning to have regular book swaps, every 3 months. Unless our plans change for some reason, we'll be having 4 swaps per year, the mailing deadlines being the last day of Feb, May, Aug, and Nov. So, the deadlines are:

- Feb 28
- May 31
- Aug 31
- Nov 30

Check out some of our previous swaps:

First off, greeting to fellow members. Sorry for taking forever to contribute to this blog. My excuse is that I have been busy with many things but the truth is that I have been slacking off. This seasonal swap thing is very exciting and will motivate me in my creative process. Cheers, bookers!

Hello everyone!
How exciting! The books swaps are going to be such a great motivator in getting me creating (hopefully) beautiful books!
Great timing too - as Rhonda said, they will be like a little christmas gift, just for ourselves! :)

Oh great! There has been a lot of interest in this swap, so I'm sure it will be great and we'll have a lot of fun with it.

I agree ali, it is a great opportunity to try new things or expiriment a little bit. Other bookbinders are sure to appreciate the efforts!!

This will be a great opportunity for us to become familiar with one another's work. It's helpful to know who else is on the team and what is their specialty. And, you get a juicy hand bound book out of the deal. What could be sweeter?

Rhonda,
Sign me up! I'd love to be a part of this and join the street team. I'd love to hear more about how to sign up.

Oh my Stella, I don't think I have a specialty! I just like to dabble in everything!

A thought: What if you wrote down everyone who wants to participate in the swap ... one name per little strip of paper. Throw all the names in a bowl. Swirl. Take out two. Then two more. Etc. The first two people have to send a book to each other. The second two people have to send a book to teach other. So on and so forth. The idea being that we all pay for shipping once, and the books get sent directly. Shipping adds up fast and I'm not so keen on paying twice. Anyone else feel me on this?

we did discuss the direct mailing option a bit already, at the first meeting i think. The reasons for sending all books to one person are - a. having all books swapped as a group would allow them to be swapped according to level of effort - b. it will allow the books to be photographed together (nice, although obviously not crucial) and - c. there is no chance that anyone will get stiffed without a return book.

Ah. I see. Well, that makes sense. Thanks for explaining that, Rhonda.

of course none of this is written in stone and the process of the swap can change or evolve or whatever, but i do think it is important to make sure nobody gets shafted without a return book, and this seems like it would certainly avoid that from happening.

The book swap is such an awesome idea! I'm happy that we have a nice, long lead time to create our book if we choose to participate.
