Books About Books

What is your favorite book about books? I must say, I for myself find it very hard to make a choice. I recently asked the question on the mailing list and most of the answers I got named books about bookbinding. I hope all those who came up in favor of one or several titles will have the time to contribute a short review of their favorite book. Many titles I personally didn't know, and I love to expand my library of books about bookbinding!

Other than more or less instructional books about bookbinding, there are also gallery books showing off books, bindings and book art. There are novels where bookbinders, librarians or other "book folk" and their work are in the center of focus. And many more genre that would fall into this category. What is your favorite? - Let us know in the comment section!

Oh, and then we could of course open up this category for other media about books. For now I would like to finish off with this delightful little movie about books and libraries and reading:

I'm not a member of the team, just a blog lurker, so I hope it is okay to comment.

Alisa Golden's, Making Handmade Books is my go to when I want to learn a new binding.

As for books about books, I really enjoyed Ex Libris, a book of essays by Anne Fadiman.

I'm a lurker as well and although I do some bookbinding, I also translate them and love reading them. My "book about books" favorite and suggestion would be the fantasy trilogy Inkheart by Cornelia Funke.
I hope you don't mind a suggestion that isn't technical :)

Hi K,

ah, inkheart :-) I "read" it as an audiobook and so enjoyed hearing about Mo repairing the books.
For some reason I have not thought of Fantasy books about books to this point, but now that you mention it, "Neverending Story" by Michael Ende comes to mind - one of my favorite children's books.

Books about books...

apart keuth smith's series on book arts and bookbinding, and Janapense Bookbinding by Ikegami, I would suggest:

-"the Archaeology of Medieval Bookbiding" by J. Szirmai
A "bible" for conservators, can be really useful also for bookbinders who search inspiration from the past

some novels:
-"the Club Dumas" by Arturo Peréz-Reverte
So much better than the film (the ninth Gate)...
-"The Journal of Dora Damage" by Belinda Starling
a novel about a female bookbinder in the XIXth century UK
-"the Shadow of the Wind" by Carlos Luis Zafòn
-"the Thirteenth Tale" by Diane Setterfield
-"Parnassus on Wheels" and "Tha Haunted Bookshop" by Christopher Morley

and since I am Italian...

-"the name of the Rose" by Umberto Eco

Just finished reading 'Grimoires: A History of Magic Books' by Owen Davies. It was fantastic.
